While you’re in the neighborhood, one last stopbefore you start burning some calories: Historic Sanford. It’s five miles farther east on Hwy 46 from the US 17/92 intersection. The reward: A roughly one-hour walking tour of the more than century-old downtown district. One of the first things you’ll learn is that during its agricultural prime Sanford was the celery capital of the universe. If someone doesn’t tell you, you’ll get the hint that this town was ga-ga over its staple crop when you see the columns on some of its buildings – they’re crowned with celery carvings supporting the roofs. The 22 tour stops include the Pico Hotel, Restaurant and Stores, built by pioneer Henry B. Plant in an elegant Turkish style that on one corner resembles a mosque; the Cracker-style Brady Livery Stable, which pretty much speaks for itself and in a later life was the county jail; the Whaler’s Saloon, a Romanesque Revival structure that didn’t cater to whalers but did entertain plenty of marathon drinkers; and the Wilton Hotel, a Classical Revival building flanked by oaks that still serves as a hotel, now called the Montezuma. All of these date to the 1880s and 1890s.
